Tulips with mouths agape
like fish gasping at the air
desperate for the sea.
Cat loafs lazily in the sun.
She tells me about how
her ex-husband spoke in tongues
and died from a rattlesnake bite.
Her mind flies away

to float high into the sky

that was laced with the smells of take-out and diesel
with shakes of rain beginning like foot drops on concrete
Full stop sign heed and look around
there's a sound happening at the corner club
Free Jazz heavy breathing until screaming
spilling out of the doors into the street's light identifiers.
Fist fight in full flight until out of sight
when the red and blue flash siren stops

Ice cream sherbet Pac-Man gum ball clear glitter sandals
and chocolate plastic smells.
You told me that throwing a ball over the apartment building
was something we could achieve this summer
as we cheered each other on.
We counted cars that drove by from where we perched on the grass,
saying which we would own,
and you were making yourself burp
from drinking out of the apartment garden tap for a laugh,
while we shot bullets at the sun, trying to knock it out of the sky.
80s kids can't stay kids forever.
They dissolve with the decade
like polaroid film faded by the sun and time.

with a base note of spring drying lilac.
The street's metalic ants walk on,
perhaps ignoring or out of pure ignorance,
failing to acknowledge the air around them
or us.

I pull out a series of words and speak them to the air,
so that maybe they will reach your ear somewhere
as you walk down a street on the other side
of a breathing swimming landscape
thinking you heard me speak, but assume

I used to walk through the streets all night, that some
may have mistaken me for homeless. I guess I was
homeless in a way, trying to find my home in the world.
Have I found it after all this time walking?
Have I found it down every alley and park
in this city where everything is made of concrete -
even the people?
I don't know.
I always feel it's been found but after a while,
I'm as restless as a migrating bird, and I
need to take flight through the night,
on a night that is so dark, and I wrapped in
so much black cloth, that I blend into the sky
like I lost my wings.

I remember that night we listened
to the radio playing a blue show
on the late night CBC
to fill in the background
on the miles passing.
You fell sleep in the passenger side
and when you woke,
you told me you dreamed
the highway swallowed us
into a tunnel.
We just kept on driving through
until we rode through it's asphalt
body to a field and then into the sky.
I remember feeling honored
to have made it inside your dreams.
When we got to the next truck stop
I kissed you by the lonely payphone
as if I were in love with you.
I was in love with highway you.
Only on the road, your spirit matched mine,
and our roads that we traveled
were on the same path.

He was a pilgrimage
you have to go on
I travelled his stone steps
and my hand bled
over his altars
my feet tired of the climb
Once I reached him
I disrobed at his side
and wonder if the journey
was worth it at all
After my meditation was done
I knew he is not a god
or guru
My frankincense isn't
the gift he needs
I dress and walk in the rain
most of the night
Water washed away his mud
from my breasts
and his clay from my mouth
The gift of sight was not
what I came here for

Crashing sounds of radio waves
drive past me from an open window
of a car trying desperately to get somewhere

I'm glad I didn't catch what it was
I'm tired of the noise
and overwhelmed

It's hard to have hope these days
but as I can hear the people
who live in the tent city at the end of this park
ring out in the early morning with laughter
that even in the bleakest situations

I had to write a poem about making love to someone
because a poet should never sleep with their muse
they need them to remind them of longing

The act of just writing a poem

are not the same either

because if not

The ache comes into the stomach
like a beast with metal teeth
eating it from the inside
this isn't hunger
it's desire.
Friendless friends fist through
the sidewalk garbage
in search of hunger.
they lost it somewhere.
The city's wide electric neon
hums its tune in the ears.
Siren of fake desire
will feed the hungry
for a little while for a price.
Never say how much money
you have to the hungry.
Don't make eye contact
but keep them in sight.
These men are hungry
for your desire
and will take you
where the neon lights
are shut off.
You can escape if you desire
if you can make it
from this street and that road
The 10A will open it's mouth
devour you down it's throat.

I remember being so mad

He wanted the small talk on afternoons,
and shallow talks with neighbours
that end up like a soundless drone to my ears.
I smashed through the windows like sunlight does,
and ran like a lassoed horse that broke free
away from it all.
Leaving everyone to deal with the confetti of glass
and the echo of blood that dropped from his finger
to the floor in it's freedom smash
The tear he shed washed the drop away
knowing he could not follow me
beyond the hills.
