into a glass and drink it

I pictured splintered wood
and concrete spewing from you
like a volcano of landscape-vomit

There was nothing left in the old apartment
after it was cleaned out.
Everything that made your apartment so cozy
and personalized was gone, like you never
lived here. You passed from this life
and now it was like you were never here at all.
The way the sun poured through the spout of the window
and arched itself on the floor, resting its back against the
opposite living room wall, kind of made me smile from
the front hallway before I was leaving.
This is how you saw this place 30 years ago, and I
can see how you chose it to be your home all these years.
The arch of the entrance to the little corridor
leading into the bathroom and bedroom.
The walled mirror over your record player
where you must have checked your hair
before going out.
The ground level vision you had of the backyard flowers
As I still think on your old apartment, and you today,
what I wouldn't give to live there.
To give up my house to have the chance to wake up
this morning and drink my morning coffee at your table
as the sun starts to rise over the other side of the building
making it's way across your living room floor.

and you were making yourself burp
from drinking out of the apartment garden tap for a laugh,
while we shot bullets at the sun, trying to knock it out of the sky.

I used to walk through the streets all night, that some
may have mistaken me for homeless. I guess I was
homeless in a way, trying to find my home in the world.
Have I found it after all this time walking?
Have I found it down every alley and park
in this city where everything is made of concrete -
even the people?
I don't know.
I always feel it's been found but after a while,
I'm as restless as a migrating bird, and I
need to take flight through the night,
on a night that is so dark, and I wrapped in
so much black cloth, that I blend into the sky
like I lost my wings.
